YouTube for increasing your video traffic

The best source of traffic to websites is video. You can use video to keep existing visitors coming back for more and to attract even more people.

I recently took part in a Video Traffic Academy webinar held by Lewis Howes and James Wedmore and I want to share with you some tips on how you can best use YouTube:

  • Consistency equals momentum - make people look forward to something on a regular systematic schedule.  Try and upload a minimum of one video per week, on the same day.
  • Be transparent - people like interacting with someone they have seen so let people see you. Instead of recording your voice over images, be in front of the camera and deliver the message.
  • Create seamless integration - send traffic from your YouTube video to pages on your site or blog that also have videos on them.
  • Repurpose your content - turn your articles and podcasts into videos and turn your videos into blog posts.
  • Optimise your videos - identify the most appropriate keywords. A keyword is a word or phrase that people might think of when trying to find you, your business, products or services.

Videos don't have to be viral but need to be engaging. Just follow these essentials and boom, you'll be good to go!:

  • Provide an intro or video bumper – share who you are, why people should be listening to you, what the video is all about and why it's important for them to watch.
  • If you had promised your viewers something, you can be sure they'll be looking forward to it - don't deny them.
  • Give your viewers a call-to-action - urge them to take a next step e.g. "view other", "go to website", "get in touch", etc.  Give them suggestions of what they could do next after watching your video and the value of taking this step.

Finally, the three most powerful things that will guarantee ranking to your videos (according to James Wedmore)

  • Add a call-to-action overlay
  • Add backlinks to your videos and channel
  • Encourage video responces on your videos and reply to them all (your viewers will feel appreciated and valued)
