An Interview with Lusungu
An Interview with Lusungu

How would you describe yourself?

I once heard someone describe me as, "You know, black guy, wears a hat", and you know what they say, if the hat fits...

If you were to choose a name for yourself, what name would you go for?

While I love my name and wouldn't for a second think of trading down, I've always been a fan of people with just one name - Leon, Madonna... Coolio. I would have to go with my favourite, and unfortunately unused, nickname, The. This started as a bit of a joke with some friends after we went through a sequence of names for each other:  surname; initials and finally; single letter. I was Chikamata for a few weeks (which was abbreviated to Chiko and actually stuck for a few years), then LC for a little while and finally L. I have no idea how or why we found out that El means The in Spanish, but we went with it... think that lasted all of a day, it just got confusing.

As a kid, what was your dream career?

I had 3 "serious" career plans as a kid - astronaut, house husband, and vice president. I have always and will always be all of the above as I always reach for the stars, love being surrounded by cherished people and know pretty important people.

Is it what you are doing now?

In short, no, I am not doing that now, so thanks for bringing that up and making me feel like a total failure.

Who has been the biggest influence on your life? What lessons did that person teach you?

I think life itself has been my biggest influence, I'm just lucky to have had the privilege of going to good schools, living in different countries and meeting (this includes reading about) some pretty cool people on the way. If I have to pick, it would probably be my mother because she taught me to ask questions if I'm not sure. I'm sure lots of people had said the same, but I give her full credit on that one.

If you could interview anyone from your life living or dead, but not a celebrity, who would it be and why?

At an engagement party a few years ago I met "someone" who couldn't say what he does for a living, he used to work with the police so my guess is he is now MI5 or MI6. Nuff said.

Do you have any phobia(s)?

I'm a pretty macho dude, but I've recently developed a totally rational fear of seagulls and crows.

Which is your favourite sport?

It's called the beautiful game for a reason.

What's in your backpack now?

Lots of paper, 2 pens, laptop case, diary, notebook, lunch box (yes I still call it that), softball kit, keys, wallet, iPod and earphones.

Which is your favourite meal?

I never know which way to go on this question, if it's between breakfast, lunch and dinner it has got to be dinner, I want to die in my bed, in the middle of the night, with a belly full of good food. If it's a choice between every single meal I've ever had I'd have to say shoot me now.

What plans do you have for the weekend?

I'm playing in a softball tournament with my old team from Manchester. Which is actually code for...
